Well it is Halloween
Originally released in 2004, this the 2nd Ed which first came out in 2010. The way it works is that you have a starter tile, which is basically the entrance and foyer of the house and then you place tiles as you explore the house, which is random. The tiles are shuffled before the game so the layout is always different. Here is an example of layout during gameplay
The pentagons are the character sheets. The nearest tiles faceup are the ground floor and tiles further down the table beyond the dice are the basement (the upper floor hasn't yet been explored). The long cards is the picture are Item, Event and Omen cards which are drawn dependent on where your character goes or more accurately what tiles. The flavour text on the card is erring on the creepy with a bit of a Lovecraft vibe. Drawing an Omen card triggers a Haunt roll. When you fail on of these the game changes. Up to this point all players have been good guys, now one turns traitor. That player gets the Traitors Tome and the other players gets the Survival Guide. Each doesn't know what the other needs to succeed. Obviously after repeat plays with the same players that will change.
So far I have played this three times with three vastly different games. The first lasted about an hour, the second over three hours (we virtually used every tile in the box!) and the last was prob ninety minutes. Duration depends on how soon the haunt is triggered, how much of the house has been explored and the scenario being played. With 50 scenarios in the box there is good reply with this. A most enjoyable game
And of course, an expansion has just been released, Widow's Walk which just means more fun to be had
