Hoping to get this blog motoring again
Well life has gotten in the way again so I haven't been chained to the keyboard and updating this as I would have liked. I will make this a more lengthy post detailing what's gone on recently.
Work has been stressful and the main cause for lack of progress, i am just burned out at the end of the day. Still we must persevere.
Gamingwise, I have been playing in a Dark Heresy 2nd Ed campaign. It was a short one as the GM is now abroad. I will be honest I bought a fair bit of the 1st Ed, thought it was decent and the 2nd Ed just didn't appeal to me at the time of it's release. (Both are out of print, 2nd Ed stuff is going for crazy money 1st Ed stuff not so bad). After playing it, I concede that 2nd Ed is a damn good game with more flexibility, the characters in 1st Ed are locked in their careers more with specific progression trees. Thematically I think that suits the 40k universe, which in my eyes, pretty much has a caste like system. Three new players (as in to tabletop rpg's) so that was a real win and they enjoyed it. The mantle has been passed on to me to run the next game but I will come back to that.
Interesting news recently is that there is a new 40k rpg coming from Ulisses North America (those who brought us the English version of Das Schwarze Auge, Germany's top rated RPG i.e. The Dark Eye). The first product line is called Wrath & Glory and I see they have got Ross Watson on board. He was heavily involved with FFG's 40k games so that is a good sign. Here is a link to their teaser site
The quality of The Dark Eye product line and the fact they have got Ross Watson, this should be an ace product that they plan to release next year. Also some, if not all, of the out of print stuff will be appearing on drivethrurpg, a bit like when Cubicle 7 got the Warhammer Fantasy licence, the old FFG pdf's went back up.
So my turn to run a game. This is to continue encouraging these new players into the rpg hobby. I have selected The One Ring game, the current rpg based on Middle Earth (note there is also Adventures in Middle Earth which is a port of The One Ring to D&D 5th Ed ruleset under a OGL. Both are published by Cubicle 7 in the UK). My reasons for this rpg are a) it is a relatively rules light system and b) they are familiar with the world. That was one issue of the Dark Heresy game, they were new to the 40k universe and found it quite daunting. This is easier for them. I am looking forward to this and aim to do character gen at the end of the month.
Post will follow about this and I hope to do some of those Call of Cthulhu posts I promised ages ago.
